Two repairs.
Companion study. The argued essay on this maamar is The repair that changes nothing; this piece dissects the snow/wool pair it stands on.
There is a line in Isaiah that everyone knows and almost nobody reads twice:
אִם־יִהְיוּ חֲטָאֵיכֶם כַּשָּׁנִים כַּשֶּׁלֶג יַלְבִּינוּ, אִם־יַאְדִּימוּ כַתּוֹלָע כַּצֶּמֶר יִהְיוּ YESHAYAHU 1:18
If your sins be like scarlet, they shall become white as snow; if they be red like crimson, they shall become as wool. It reads as one promise said twice — the parallelism of a poet who wants you to feel the assurance land a second time. Red becomes white; red becomes white. Snow, wool. Same idea, different fabric.
The Rebbe Maharash noticed that it isn't. Shani, scarlet, is a technical term: a white thread that has been dyed red. The redness is applied. It sits on a fiber that was white before the dye and is white underneath it now. Bleach the thread and you have not manufactured whiteness — you have uncovered it. But tola, the crimson-worm, is red in its substance. There is no white fiber underneath, because the color is not on the thing. The color is the thing.
So the verse is not one promise repeated. It is two entirely different situations, and the verse knows the difference, and it prescribes a different repair for each. Sometimes what went wrong in a person went wrong at the surface — the habits, the speech, the conduct of an ordinary Tuesday — and the person underneath the conduct was never implicated. And sometimes it went deeper than that, into what the person takes himself to be, and there is no clean layer waiting to be exposed.
The question of what could possibly repair the second case is the engine of a maamar the Rebbe said at the Chai Elul farbrengen of 5727 — a maamar with an unusual density of anniversaries built into it. It unpacks a maamar the Rebbe Rayatz said on his first Chai Elul in America, which fell on Shabbos Parshas Ki Savo, as it did again in 5727. And to unpack that, it reaches back to a maamar the Rebbe Maharash said on Shabbos Parshas Ki Savo of 5627 — one hundred years earlier to the parsha. Three generations, one Shabbos, and at the center of the hundred-year-old layer: snow and wool.
The machinery behind the verse
The Maharash's key is a verse in Daniel, from the vision of the Ancient of Days: לְבוּשֵׁיהּ כִּתְלַג חִוָּר וּשְׂעַר רֵאשֵׁיהּ כַּעֲמַר נְקֵא — His garment like white snow, and the hair of His head like pure wool. Snow is a garment. Wool is hair. And the difference between a garment and hair is the difference between what a person wears and what grows out of him.
A garment is put on and taken off; it has the shape of the wearer without being the wearer. Hair is stranger. It is lifeless in itself — you can cut it without pain — and yet it is rooted in the head, and the maamar seizes on the one physical fact that matters: grab a person by the hair and the whole body comes along. שער רישי׳ הם המשכות מעצם הנפש — the hairs of the head are drawings-down from the essence of the soul. Hair is the one extremity through which the whole can be moved. It images a channel that runs to the essence, precisely because it carries nothing of its own.
Now the two halves of Isaiah sort themselves. The dyed thread — the flaw that sits on the garments of the soul, on thought, speech, and action — is repaired by snow: the garment like white snow, a clean garment answering a stained one. The crimson-worm — the flaw that reached the essence — can only be answered by wool: by the level of hair, the channel from the essence itself.
Stated that way it sounds tidy, and the entire interest of the Rebbe's maamar is that it is not tidy at all. Pull on any strand of the pairing and it inverts in your hand. I want to walk through four of these inversions, because they build, and the last one is the point.
First inversion: the constrictive term is the effective one
Locate the two images in their Kabbalistic addresses and something is immediately wrong. Snow — the garment — is the thirteen tikkunei dikna, the rectifications of the beard, rooted in the concealed mind of Arich, where the gevura of Atik is clothed. Wool — the hair of the head — sits in the gulgalta, where the chesed of Atik is clothed. So the maamar, citing the Alter Rebbe's Siddur: the beard is gevura, severity; the hair of the head is chesed, kindness.
Notice, first, that this runs against the pictures. Snow is white, and white is the color every schoolchild assigns to chesed; wool is called amar naka, pure. The reading is fixed not by the imagery but by the siting — which face, which vessel — and the siting overrides the imagery. That is worth filing away as a general fact about how this vocabulary works: the figures are addresses, not pictures.
But the deeper inversion is this. Wool is chesed and stands higher; snow is gevura and stands lower — and yet it is snow that actually penetrates a person's faculties and works on them, while wool never enters at all. The kinder, higher term is the inert one.
The maamar's explanation turns on what the gevura of the beard actually is. It is not harshness. The thirteen tikkunei dikna are the thirteen attributes of mercy; their gevura is that they come to sweeten the judgments — and judgments are sweetened only at their root. Their severity is jurisdiction: the reach required to take hold of a din where it originates. And jurisdiction has a cost. To hold standing over a domain is to be implicated in that domain. Because the beard addresses the judgments, its sweetening is shaped by what it sweetens — it arrives as an answer to a case, and an answer has the dimensions of its question.
The hair of the head answers nothing. It stands above the whole business of sweetening judgments; its kindness is מצד עצמו — from its own side, unprompted, shaped by no recipient. Which is exactly why it has no grip. Mercy senses the distress of another, and sensing is a form of contact. Chesed from one's own side touches nothing on the way out.
So the pairing's first lesson is uncomfortable: responsiveness is what buys traction, and responsiveness is itself a limitation. The power that can enter a person's actual faculties can enter them because it is already, in a precise sense, involved with them — and everything involved is bounded by what it is involved with.
Second inversion: the verse says like wool, not and wool
The maamar's operative verse is from Tehillim 147, in the same psalm as the praise of Jerusalem and Zion: הַנֹּתֵן שֶׁלֶג כַּצָּמֶר — He who gives snow like wool.
Read the preposition. Not snow and wool, two goods dispensed side by side. Not wool instead of snow, the higher replacing the lower. Snow like wool: snow that remains snow and acquires the character of wool. The modality of one is imprinted on the other while the other stays itself.
Which settles a question about direction. If the operation were an elevation — snow raised up to wool — the target of the whole affair would be the higher term, and the lower would be scaffolding. The grammar says otherwise. The finished product is snow: the bounded, gradated, involved power, now carrying inside itself the absoluteness of the essence. Wool is the qualifier. Snow is the destination. The entire maamar is aimed downward, and this is the first place it says so out loud — though not the last, because the verse the maamar exists to explain, וברך את עמך את ישראל, commits the same inversion in its opening words, blessing the simple before the learned. Hold that; the essay ends there.
Third inversion: one of these repairs is not a repair
Watch the maamar's verbs. What snow performs is תיקון ומילוי הפגמים — repair and filling-in of the flaws. Something was missing; something is supplied. It is work in the ordinary sense: an agent acting on a patient, at a rate, with more and less. That is why the maamar says the snow-repair is במדידה והגבלה, in measure and limitation, with many gradations of degree. Anything that works on something works at a rate, and rates admit of degrees.
What wool performs is described in entirely different language: מתגלה בהם שאין שייך כלל שיהי׳ בהם פגם — it becomes revealed in the faculties that, from the side of their essence, a flaw was never possible in them at all. Nothing is supplied, because nothing was missing. No agent acts on any patient. The wool-repair is not a repair; it is a re-description — and re-description has no rate, which is why it alone is without gradation. You cannot half-disclose that something never happened.
But this raises the obvious objection, and the maamar raises it against itself. Wool was introduced as the answer to the flaw that reached the essence — the crimson-worm, red in substance. If the essence can be reached by a flaw, it can be damaged, in which case it is not the essence. And if it cannot, then the wool-repair has nothing to do, and Isaiah's second clause is empty.
The Rebbe's resolution — delivered, characteristically, inside a bracket in ois ט — is that the word essence was doing double duty the entire time. There is an essence of the revealed faculties: their own root, their deepest self-configuration, and it can absolutely be damaged, because it belongs to the same economy as the faculties whose essence it is. That is what the crimson-worm reached. And there is עצם הנשמה ממש — the essence of the soul literally, which is not a deeper floor of the same building. It is categorically separate, and it was never a candidate for damage. גם בשעת החטא היא באמנה אתו ית׳ — even at the moment of the sin, it is in faithfulness with Him. Not despite the sin, as a loyalty strained and holding. The sin simply never transacted at that address.
Now the wool-repair makes sense, and it is stranger than repair. Nothing in the damaged faculties is altered. What changes is what the damage counts as. Once the essence is revealed within the faculties, the flaw is reclassified: it was a surface event in something whose depth never consented — weather on the face of a thing that did not agree to it. The transgression is not undone. It is relocated to the exterior of a person who turns out to have had an interior it never touched.
Fourth inversion: the wall is definition, not distance
At this point the maamar has built itself a beautiful problem. The essence is incorruptible precisely because it is separate — מובדל מהגילויים. And precisely because it is separate, אין שייך שיפעול בהם — it cannot act within the faculties. The untouchable reserve is untouchable in both directions. A ground of repair that cannot reach the place where a person actually lives — the Tuesday, the temper, the speech — is a lovely thing to know about and no use whatsoever.
The lazy diagnosis of the blockage is distance: the essence is simply too high. And the maamar's single most surprising sentence is the one that refuses this. גם עצם הנשמה היא מוגדרת בגדר, והגדר שלה הוא למעלה מציור דכחות — the essence of the soul is also defined within a definition, and its definition is: above the configuration of the faculties.
Sit with what that does. "Above" has been demoted from an exemption to a property. The essence is not blocked by having too much of anything; it is blocked by having a determinate character at all — and transcending the faculties is a determinate character. Anything with a definition stands outside anything else with a definition, and no increase in the altitude of one will ever carry it into the other. The wall between the essence and the faculties is not high. It is conceptual, and you cannot climb a concept.
Which is why the maamar's mechanism for the join is not a stronger version of either term, and not a synthesis blending both. It is a drawing-down ממקום שלמעלה משניהם — from a place higher than both. And the maamar tells you exactly what that place is: the essence of the soul as it is rooted in Atzmus, where הפשיטות דהנשמה והציור דשכל ומדות שבה הם כולא חד — the simplicity of the soul and the configuration of its intellect and emotions are entirely one.
Read the tense of that claim carefully, because it is the whole resolution. It does not say the two are reconciled there, or harmonized there, or that a higher power fuses them there. At the root, they were never two. The split between essence and configuration is a feature of the defined levels — real at every level where definition obtains, and simply absent at the one level where it doesn't. The third term is not a synthesis, because a synthesis presupposes two things to combine. It is a priority: the place upstream of the distinction, from which the distinction can be joined without either side being violated, because from there the distinction has not yet been made.
And the consequence, when that level is revealed within a person, is stated with a precision worth quoting exactly: the faculties become such that אין שייך שיהיו שלא כפי הכוונה — it is not possible for them to be otherwise than according to the intent. Not restrained into compliance, not supervised into it, not corrected toward it at some rate. Constituted such that deviation has no purchase. That is what snow-like-wool means: the ordinary, bounded, working faculties of a person, operating in their own shape, at their own rate — of which it can suddenly be said that straying has nowhere to stand.
Sent versus arrived
The maamar contains a second pair, from its Maharash layer: Jerusalem and Zion, lower fear and higher fear — the awe generated by contemplating creation, which reaches even the animal soul, and the awe of the light beyond worlds, which is greater and which leaves the animal soul untouched. Greater and less effective: by now the pattern is familiar, and the maamar says explicitly that Zion and Jerusalem are בדוגמת שלג וצמר, on the model of snow and wool.
On the model of — and not identical to. Because in the very act of drawing the analogy, the maamar marks the difference between the pairs, and the difference is the sharpest distinction in the whole piece.
an empowerment is sent
the level itself relocates
From Zion there is drawn to Jerusalem a נתינת כח — an empowerment, a grant of capacity. Jerusalem, so empowered, goes and does the work: refines the body, the animal soul, the person's portion of the world. And Zion remains Zion. The maamar's own analogy for this is study that brings to deed — the study is genuinely elevated by issuing in action, but the study stays study, seated where it was, sending.
Whereas with the other pair: בחינת צמר עצמה נמשכת בבחינת שלג. The level of wool itself is drawn into the level of snow. Nothing is dispatched, because the sender arrives. And the maamar draws the consequence as a strict inequality: the elevation effected in wool by entering snow is greater than the elevation effected in Zion by empowering Jerusalem — because only the joining in which the higher term actually relocates reveals, in the higher term, its own root in Atzmus. A transmission leaves the transmitter intact, and that intactness is precisely its limitation. What never left home never finds out what it is away from home — and in this architecture, what the essence is away from home, resident inside the bounded faculties it was defined against, is nothing less than its own rootedness in the place where it and the faculties were never two.
This is also why the maamar's account of teshuva lands where it does. The higher is elevated by descent, it says, only in the essential case — כשהעליון פועל שינוי בהתחתון, when the higher effects an actual change in the lower. Where nothing below was altered, nothing above is transformed; you get transmission, not elevation. And teshuva is the one avoda whose object is already finished. Every other service addresses acts not yet performed. Teshuva reaches back into what is settled — the done deed, the sealed record — and changes it, to the point of זדונות נעשו לו כזכיות, willful wrongs standing as merits. It is the maximal case of the higher changing the lower, and so it returns the maximal ascent: באין ערוך, beyond all proportion. Not a larger quantity of the usual result. Off the scale on which the usual results are ranked.
The one who was the join all along
All of which was in service of a question about word order. The verse the maamar exists to explain — השקיפה ממעון קדשך מן השמים וברך את עמך את ישראל — blesses amcha, Your people, before Yisrael. And the Rayatz's maamar identifies the terms: Yisrael is those who know Torah and dwell in its tent; amcha is the simple people, who keep Torah and mitzvos בתמימות ובפשטות — in wholeheartedness and plainness. The verse blesses the simple Jew first, and the whole maamar is the reason.
Here is where the structure appears, for one moment, to break. The Rebbe assigns the simple Jew to the wool line: דענין הפשטות הוא מצד הפשיטות דעצם הנשמה — the plainness is from the simplicity of the essence of the soul. But wool, we have spent this entire essay establishing, is the term that does not act. It is the higher fear that leaves the animal soul untouched, the chesed with no grip, the essence sealed behind its own definition. Read flatly, the maamar has just made the simple Jew the inert term — honored, essential, and useless. That is plainly not the intent, and the resolution is sitting in the text of ois יג, in a clause that is easy to read past.
דנוסף לזה שוברך את עמך נמשכת אח״כ על ידם לכל ישראל — the blessing to Your people is afterward drawn, through them, to all of Israel. Through them. The simple Jew is not the sealed essence; he is a place where the essence is already flowing to an address. His plainness is not the peshitus locked behind its definition — it is that peshitus embodied in a life: the uncompounded showing up as the uncomplicated, davening and tzedaka and honesty in weights, an essence that has already acquired a Tuesday. He is not one of the two terms awaiting joining. He is the join — the place in the world where snow-like-wool is not a promise but a person.
And that is why the verse says וברך only once for what the maamar insists are two blessings. Two recipients, one verb — בכדי לרמז שהם ענין אחד, to hint that they are one matter. The blessing of the essence and the blessing of the faculties are not two acts performed side by side. They are a single act: the essence entering the configuration, so that the configuration — in its own shape, by its own lights, on its own Tuesday — is according to the essence. The simple Jew is blessed first because the essence must be present before there is anything for the faculties to be configured by. The order of the verse is the order of the joining.
The maamar's last move, after all of this, is to hand the verse back. ואין מקרא יוצא מידי פשוטו — and a verse does not depart from its plain meaning. Look down from Your holy dwelling and bless Your people, Israel: children, life, sustenance in abundance, from the full, open, holy, generous hand. Twelve sections of interior architecture, and the plain sense is not a rung that was climbed past. It is what the architecture was for. Which is, come to think of it, the essay's fourth inversion applied to itself: the depth was never a departure from the surface. At the root, they were one matter all along.
