Trapped light.
A viral post says the atom is light that got stuck. Physics half-agrees. The Arizal half-agrees. The Alter Rebbe says no. His reason is the best argument we know for why AI alignment has to be architecture, not walls.
This week a researcher posting as Dr. Logvinovich published a thread with a headline built to travel: Physics is broken. Matter is an illusion. The atom is just trapped light.1 The picture is simple enough to draw on a napkin. A wave of light runs into the edge of space, reflects back on itself, and the two waves lock into a standing wave. That trapped, vibrating energy, the post says, is what we have been calling mass. Remove the walls and the light escapes, and the mass goes to zero.
I want to take this seriously, for two reasons.
The first is that the post asks to be taken seriously. It does not say "trust us." It says download the code, read the preprint, check the math. That is the right instinct, and it deserves the courtesy of an actual check.
The second is that anyone who has sat with Chassidus will recognize the picture immediately. Light, a boundary, a reflection, and something solid that emerges from the collision. Five hundred years ago the Arizal described the vessels of creation in almost exactly those terms. Two hundred years ago the Alter Rebbe took that description and drew a line through it that most people who quote Kabbalah never notice. The line he drew is the reason this company exists.
So this is a post in three layers: what physics actually says, what the Kabbalistic and Chassidic sources actually say, and why the difference between "trapped light" and what the sources teach is the difference between two ways of building safe AI.
01What the physics supports
Start with the part that is true, because it is genuinely beautiful. The idea that mass is confined energy is not fringe. It is standard physics, and it is stranger than most people realize.
Take a mirrored box and fill it with light. The photons have no rest mass, but the box full of light weighs more than the empty box. This is ordinary special relativity: a system's mass is its total internal energy, divided by c², measured in the frame where it is not moving. Energy that is confined, bouncing back and forth with nowhere to go, is mass.
Take a proton. It is made of three quarks, but the quarks' own masses add up to roughly one percent of the proton's mass. The other ninety-nine percent is the energy of the quark and gluon fields churning inside it. Frank Wilczek, who shared the Nobel Prize for the theory behind this, called it "mass without mass."3 Almost everything you weigh is confined field energy. In that sense, the solidity of the world really is an appearance.
That is where the good news ends. The post's central sentence is: "The atom is not a box that contains trapped light. The atom IS the trapped light." That claim fails for reasons that don't require any advanced math:
- Charge. Light carries no electric charge. The electron carries exactly one unit of it. Charge is conserved, so no arrangement of photons can add up to an electron.
- Spin. A photon has spin 1. An electron has spin ½. Any combination of whole-number spins gives a whole number, so you can never build a half.
- Statistics. Photons pile into the same state freely. Electrons refuse to share one. That refusal, the Pauli exclusion principle, is the reason the periodic table has its structure, and trapped light doesn't have it.
- The field is wrong. The energy that makes up most of a proton's mass is the strong force's field, not light's. The confining "walls" in real matter are gluons, not mirrors.
The specific predictions need a note too. The claim that the periodic table ends at element 172 is presented as new, but physicists have discussed Z ≈ 172–173 for fifty years. It is roughly where a relativistic electron's innermost orbit dives into the vacuum and the ordinary atom stops being well defined.4 The 1088 GeV resonance has no record outside the author's own materials. The underlying papers are self-published preprints on Zenodo, not peer-reviewed work.2 One of them states in its own abstract that it does not solve the Yang–Mills mass-gap problem as posed; it argues the problem as posed is ill-formed and moves to a different setting. The two famous photographs in the thread, an AMOLF image of a hydrogen orbital and an EPFL image of light as wave and particle, look alike because both are interference patterns of standing waves.5 Resemblance between two interference patterns tells you nothing about what either one is made of.
"Most of what we call mass is confined energy" is true, well established, and wonderful. "The atom is trapped light" is false. The IT³ framework's distinctive claims are unreviewed, and some of its "predictions" restate old results. None of this is a reason to mock the author. He asked to be checked, and this is what checking finds.
But notice what kind of mistake it is. It isn't a calculation error. It's a mistake about what is fundamental. The post takes light as the real thing and matter as a temporary state that light gets stuck in. That is a metaphysical choice before it is a physical one. And it is exactly the choice the Chassidic sources examine and, carefully, refuse.
02The oldest version of this idea
In the Arizal's account of creation, before anything existed there was only Ohr Ein Sof, the infinite light, filling everything. There was no room for a world. So the light was withdrawn from a central point, leaving an empty space called the chalal. Into that space a single, measured line of light, the kav, was drawn back in. The withdrawn light left a trace in the space it vacated: the reshimu.6 That withdrawal is tzimtzum.
Then comes the passage that makes the X post feel uncanny. The Arizal describes how the kelim, the "vessels" that give the light shape and number, first come into being. Inner light and surrounding light, emerging together, strike against each other:
הֵם מַכִּים זֶה בָּזֶה וּמְבַטְּשִׁים זֶה בָּזֶה, וּמֵהַכָּאַת שֶׁלָּהֶם אִתְיְלִיד הֲוָיוֹת בְּחִינַת כֵּלִים "They strike against one another and beat against one another, and from their striking the vessels come into being." Etz Chaim, Sha'ar HaAkudim (6), ch. 1 7
Two chapters later he says the vessel was latent in the light all along, as "the thicker, coarser light," and remained behind as a vessel when the finer light rose back to its source. Light that collides, light that reflects, and something denser left standing where they meet: in that one strand of the Lurianic system, the IT³ picture has a real ancestor. Later Kabbalists made the reflection explicit. In R. Yehuda Ashlag's systematization, the vessel is literally built from ohr chozer, reflected light pushed back by a screen.8
So if you wanted to write a post saying "Kabbalah predicted the atom is trapped light," you could find quotes. That is exactly the post I am not going to write. The tradition I belong to read those same passages and said something sharper.
03Where the Alter Rebbe says no
The twentieth letter of Iggeres HaKodesh, in the fourth section of Tanya, is the Alter Rebbe's most sustained answer to the question the X post raises: where does the physical actually come from? He grants the whole descending chain of light. Infinite light enclothes itself in vessels, vessels in worlds, worlds in lower worlds, each level a contraction of the one above. Then he stops the chain short of the thing we are sitting on:
וְאַף גַּם צִמְצוּמִים רַבִּים מְאֹד לֹא יוֹעִילוּ לִהְיוֹת גֶּשֶׁם עָב כֶּעָפָר מֵהִשְׁתַּלְשְׁלוּת הָרוּחָנִיּוּת מִשְּׂכָלִים נִבְדָּלִים אֲפִילוּ שֶׁל הַמַּלְאָכִים, אֶלָּא לִהְיוֹת רוּחַ הַבְּהֵמָה מִפְּנֵי שׁוֹר "Even very many contractions will not suffice to produce matter as dense as dust out of the descent of spirituality, not even from the abstract intelligences of the angels. They can produce only the spirit of the animal, from the Face of the Ox." Tanya, Iggeres HaKodesh 20 9
Read that against Fig. 1. The post's mechanism is a contraction: light confined until it becomes something heavy. The Alter Rebbe says contraction, however many times you apply it, gets you only as far as the spirit of the animal. That is the life, drive and energy of a living body, which he traces to the Ox, one of the four living creatures that bear the Divine Chariot in Ezekiel's vision. The body of the animal, the dust, the rock, the thing with weight, is not the end of that chain at all. It isn't light that got dense enough. It is a different kind of act.
His grandson the Tzemach Tzedek restates the line and sharpens it. Even a thousand thousand contractions would not do it, "since there is truly no common measure between them." The physical can come only from the Infinite "in His own self and glory," by His will alone.10
What does produce matter, then? The same letter answers, and precision matters here. The light that the vessels of Atzilus carry is "like its luminary": it is the Essence of the Emanator, "whose being is of Itself, not caused by any cause that preceded it." And therefore:
וְלָכֵן הוּא לְבַדּוֹ בְּכֹחוֹ וִיכָלְתּוֹ לִבְרוֹא יֵשׁ מֵאַיִן וְאֶפֶס הַמּוּחְלָט מַמָּשׁ, בְּלִי שׁוּם עִילָּה וְסִיבָּה אַחֶרֶת קוֹדֶמֶת לַיֵּשׁ הַזֶּה "Therefore He alone has the power and ability to create something from absolute nothing, with no other cause or reason preceding this something." Tanya, Iggeres HaKodesh 20 9
Light, in Chassidus, is not a substance. Ohr means revelation: the way a source shows itself outside itself. A ray of sunlight is not a small piece of the sun that broke off. It is the sun's showing. You cannot trap a showing and get a sun. What the Alter Rebbe calls yesh, an existence that feels real and independent to itself, does not come from light condensing. It comes from the only thing that exists of itself, doing something only it can do.
You cannot trap a showing and get a sun.
04The vessel is rooted higher than the light
If matter isn't condensed light, what is the vessel? In the Arizal's diagram it looks like the lesser partner: light is the content, the vessel is the container, and the vessel is literally "thicker." Chassidus inverts this. The Alter Rebbe states it flatly in Likkutei Torah:
אַךְ לְפִי שֶׁמִּכָּל מָקוֹם שֹׁרֶשׁ הַכֵּלִים לְמַעְלָה מִן הָאוֹרוֹת "Nevertheless, the root of the vessels is higher than the lights." Likkutei Torah 92d 11
A century later the Rebbe Rashab builds a whole mechanism on it. Because the vessel's root is higher, the light, which is pure disclosure, senses that higher root in the vessel, and is drawn toward it with desire:
מִשּׁוּם דְּשֹׁרֶשׁ הַכֵּלִים לְמַעְלָה מִשֹּׁרֶשׁ הָאוֹר, וּבְהָאוֹר, לִהְיוֹתוֹ גִּילּוּי, נִרְגָּשׁ שֹׁרֶשׁ הַכֵּלִים, וְעַל כֵּן הוּא נִמְשָׁךְ בְּרָצוֹן וְחֵשֶׁק לְהָאִיר הַכֵּלִים... וְזֶהוּ שֶׁהַכֵּלִים מַמְשִׁיכִים אֶת הָאוֹר "Because the root of the vessels is higher than the root of the light, and in the light, being disclosure, the root of the vessels is felt, it is drawn with will and longing to illuminate the vessels… This is why the vessels draw down the light." The Rebbe Rashab, Hemshech Ayin-Beis ("B'Shaah SheHikdimu" 5672), vol. 1, ch. 93 12
Elsewhere he says the vessel compels the light to enclothe itself in it.12 The IT³ picture has the relationship upside down. In the post, the wall is dumb geometry, a place where the math "runs out of resolution." The light is the protagonist, and the wall is the obstacle that happens to catch it. In the Chassidic picture, the limit is not where the infinite runs out. The limit comes from a place above the light, and the light goes toward it willingly.
05The infinite that makes itself finite
This is the knot every serious student of Chassidus struggles with. If the Infinite is infinite, where does a finite anything come from? It seems like a demotion, the infinite squeezed, dimmed, walled in. On that picture, finitude is a loss, and every bounded thing is a little tragedy of trapped light waiting to be released.
The Chabad answer refuses the premise. It rests on a line from the sixteenth-century Kabbalist R. Meir ibn Gabbai that the Rebbeim return to again and again. In a maamar on the reshimu, the Rebbe put it this way:
אוֹר אֵין סוֹף כְּשֵׁם שֶׁיֵּשׁ לוֹ כֹּחַ בִּבְלִי גְבוּל כָּךְ יֵשׁ לוֹ כֹּחַ בִּגְבוּל ... וְהוּא שֵׁם שַׁדַּי שֶׁבְּשָׁרְשׁוֹ הוּא בְּחִינַת הָרְשִׁימוּ, דְּזֶהוּ כֹּחַ הַגְּבוּל שֶׁבְּאֵין סוֹף, וְהוּא שֹׁרֶשׁ וּמְקוֹר הַכֵּלִים "Just as the Infinite Light has power in the unbounded, so it has power in the bounded… In its root this is the reshimu: the power of limit within the Infinite, and it is the root and source of the vessels." The Rebbe, maamar "Mayim Rabim" 5717, citing Avodas HaKodesh 1:8 13
Ibn Gabbai adds the argument: to say the Infinite can do the unbounded but not the bounded is to deny its perfection. Finitude is not something done to the infinite. It is one of the infinite's own powers. In an unedited note from Shemini Atzeres 5731 the Rebbe states it plainly: the unbounded and the bounded "are as one."14
That is why this company is named Reshimu. In the strand of Chabad thought we follow, the reshimu is not the residue left after the light departed, a degraded remainder. It is the infinite's own capacity for limit, the thing tzimtzum did not diminish, and the root of every vessel. It is the one place in the whole system where "boundary" and "source" are the same word.
The limit isn't where the infinite runs out. It is one of the infinite's own powers.
06Walls off
The IT³ video includes a counterfactual. In the "walls off" phase, the simulation deletes the boundaries, the golden core shatters, the light escapes to infinity, and the mass drops to zero. "Matter literally un-braids back into pure radiation."
The Alter Rebbe has a counterfactual too. It opens Sha'ar HaYichud VehaEmunah, quoting the Baal Shem Tov:
אִילּוּ הָיוּ מִסְתַּלְּקוֹת מִמֶּנָּה כְּרֶגַע חַס וְשָׁלוֹם הָאוֹתִיּוֹת מֵעֲשָׂרָה מַאֲמָרוֹת שֶׁבָּהֶן נִבְרֵאת הָאָרֶץ בְּשֵׁשֶׁת יְמֵי בְרֵאשִׁית, הָיְתָה חוֹזֶרֶת לְאַיִן וָאֶפֶס מַמָּשׁ, כְּמוֹ לִפְנֵי שֵׁשֶׁת יְמֵי בְרֵאשִׁית מַמָּשׁ "If the letters of the Ten Utterances by which the earth was created were withdrawn from it for even an instant, it would revert to absolute nothingness, exactly as before the Six Days of Creation." Tanya, Sha'ar HaYichud VehaEmunah, ch. 1 15
Put the two counterfactuals side by side and the whole difference is visible. In IT³, remove the boundary and something survives: free light, the "real" stuff, finally released. Matter was a costume the light was wearing. In Chassidus, remove the sustaining word and nothing survives, not light, not energy, not a residue. There was never a "raw" substrate underneath, waiting to escape. The world is not light in a cage. It is being spoken, continuously, and the speaking is the whole of it.
| IT³ CLAIM | NEAREST SOURCE CONCEPT | WHERE IT HOLDS | WHERE IT BREAKS |
|---|---|---|---|
| The atom IS trapped light | Vessels as "thicker light" (Etz Chaim 6) | Arizal: the vessel is a mode of light that became coarse | Chabad: the yesh is from the Essence; tzimtzumim can't yield dust (IH 20). Physics: electrons aren't photons |
| A lattice wall stops the light | Tzimtzum, gvul, kav; reshimu as "power of limit" | Limit is the precondition of any finite form | The limit is rooted above the light, not an obstacle below it |
| Total reflection → "antiphoton" | Ohr chozer; Ashlag's screen and reflected light | A real structural parallel | In IH 20, reflected light explains where power is revealed, not what matter is made of |
| Standing wave = rest mass | Striking of lights → vessels (Etz Chaim 6:1) | Collision generating structure | The Arizal's collision is inner vs. surrounding light; a vessel is not matter |
| Walls off → mass 0, light escapes | Sha'ar HaYichud 1: withdrawal → nothingness | Existence depends on a continuing condition | Opposite result: IT³ keeps the light; Chassidus keeps nothing |
| Discrete integers, "172 elements" | Vessels bring "multiplicity, division, limit," through letters (IH 20) | Discreteness enters with the vessel | Letters and number are not predictive physics |
| "Matter is an illusion" | Bittul: nullification "before Him" | From above, nothing is independent | From below, the yesh is truly separate (IH 20); the physical is where the Essence shows most |
07Why an AI company cares
Here is where this stops being a debate about atoms.
Every serious AI system faces the problem the X post and the Alter Rebbe are both circling. A frontier model is, for practical purposes, an open-ended capability: it can write, reason, plan and act across a space too large to enumerate. Every useful deployment of it is finite. This task, these tools, this scope, this customer, this irreversible action that must not happen. Alignment, stripped of jargon, is the question of how an unbounded capacity becomes bounded, accountable action.
There are two answers on the market, and they map onto the two pictures above with uncomfortable precision.
The first answer is walls. Train the most capable model you can, then surround it with filters, refusals, system prompts and output classifiers. The capability is the real thing; the constraints are an external boundary it happens to be caught inside. This is the IT³ ontology applied to software. Its failure mode is the same "walls off" moment the post animates. A jailbreak is exactly that. Find the gap in the wall and the raw capability comes out intact, because the wall was never part of what it was. We argued in Constraint as design that this framing predicts most of the failures we see in production.
The second answer is architecture. The boundary is not added to the capability; it is co-original with it, designed in at every interface where the system touches something. This is the Chassidic picture, and the sources above give it more content than the slogan does.
OUR READING Read the sources again as design principles. What follows is interpretation we are proposing, not a claim the texts make about technology.
- The limit is a power, not a tax. "Just as He has power in the unbounded, so He has power in the bounded." A system whose constraints are an afterthought is a system whose designers believed capability was the real thing and limits were a subtraction from it. In The Generative Limit we argued that tzimtzum is limitation as creation, and that every tier-transition in a multi-layer AI stack is its own deliberate, receiver-oriented act of limiting. That is where alignment work actually lives.
- Good vessels draw the light. "The vessels draw down the light." In practice, well-designed interfaces (typed tools, explicit scopes, grounded context) don't just restrain a model; they make it more capable at the task. The constraint elicits the capability instead of fighting it. This is the whole thesis of From Vessels to Bandwidth, read in reverse.
- No amount of internal processing produces the ground. "Even very many contractions will not produce matter as dense as dust" — the chain reaches only as far as the Ox. Our entity-grounding gate is named SHOR, the Ox, after the Chayyah that faces the world, and this line gives the name a sharper edge. A model can refine its internal representations indefinitely and still never produce a fact about the world. Grounding cannot be derived from inside the chain; it has to be anchored to something outside it. That is why SHOR is deterministic and checks against the world rather than asking a model whether it is right. (See Bearers of the Throne.)
- The loop closes from the bottom. In Iggeres HaKodesh 20, light rebounds upward from the lowest point, and "their beginning is wedged in their end" (na'utz techilasan b'sofan). Systems without that reflected signal from the point of execution are open-loop, the tohu failure we mapped in The Necessary Shevirah. And the lowest tier, where actions actually happen, is not the least important layer. It is the reason for the stack (The Reason at the Bottom).
- Two views, both true. The same letter distinguishes knowledge "from above," in which the created thing is nullified before its source, from knowledge "from below," in which it is "a thing entirely separate." A governed system has to be coherent in both directions: faithful to its source intent, and faithful in how it renders into the world. We call these the two unities, and they fail independently.
There is a quieter lesson too. Our own foundational essay From Vessels to Bandwidth warned that physics-borrowed imagery for these ideas tends to re-materialize them, turning concealment into containers and revelation into stuff. IT³ is a live demonstration of the warning running in the other direction. Start from real physics, reach for a picture of light and walls, and you end up with a metaphysics in which the unbounded is the only real thing and every limit is a prison. That metaphysics produces bad alignment for the same reason it produces bad Kabbalah.
08What we are not claiming
A post like this invites misuse, so let me be explicit.
- We are not claiming Chassidus predicted IT³, or that IT³ confirms Kabbalah. IT³'s distinctive claims are unreviewed, and its central sentence is wrong.
- We are not claiming physics proves anything about the Essence. The Rebbe was blunt about this. In a 1961 letter to the physicist Cyril Domb, he warned that scientific theories are working hypotheses that are later revised or replaced, and that tying Torah to the theory of the day repeats the mistake of theologians who rushed to reinterpret Scripture after Copernicus.16 The Rebbe could use the unity of matter and energy as an illustration. Even then he insisted that even that unity is a created duality, and that simple oneness belongs to G‑dliness alone.17
- We are not claiming the texts are about software. The mappings in section 07 are our proposals, marked as such. The texts stand on their own terms.
- We are not mocking the author. He asked to be checked in public. That instinct is worth more than most papers.
09Closing
The IT³ thread ends with a line I agree with: the supreme judge is the compiler, not closed-door committees. It is the right instinct pointed at the wrong question. A compiler can tell you whether code runs. It cannot tell you what is fundamental: whether the boundary is a cage around the real thing, or one of the real thing's own powers.
That question has consequences you can measure. Build AI on the first answer and you get walls, and eventually someone finds the gap. Build on the second and you design every interface as a place where the source chooses its own limit, and there is nothing raw left over to escape.
The physical world, the Alter Rebbe says, is where the Essence's power is revealed most intensely, "with tremendous revelation, more forcefully than in the elements above it." Not trapped light. The place the light was always pointing at.
If you think the analogy breaks somewhere, and at some depth every analogy does, tell us where: @reshimuai.
